Q1.Please tell us about your career.

For the last 20 years, I’ve mainly been working the United States, Japan, and Thailand as a Software Engineer, IT Architect, and instructor focused primarily on building highly scalable systems for investment banks, finance technology (FinTech), and consulting companies with millions of active users.

Before leaving the US, I started multiple technology companies focused on building business software, and e-commerce websites for companies large and small.

Looking for a new challenge, I moved to Thailand where I worked for five years as a high school technology and mathematics teacher at a large government high school with over 4,000 students. It was rewarding and challenging teaching 850 students per week and was where I learned much more about communication and software troubleshooting.

After coming to Japan in 2007, I’ve been able to work on multiple exciting projects ranging from supporting highly fault tolerant and ultra low latency Market Data systems at Nomura Securities for B2B trading and building fully automated reporting systems.

Next, I joined Monex Securities where I built a team to support market data and trading systems with 1.4 million active B2C users. Our team fully utilized AWS cloud platform making us one of the first investment banks in the world to move to the cloud.

I then moved to Deloitte Digital Japan where we built high-value solutions for the world’s leading firms across multiple industries ranging from Bitcoin and manufacturing to consumer goods like coffee and vitamins.

The overall theme of my experience has been in building and training engineering teams with a strong desire to deliver business value through the use of technology. I’ve also focused on continuous learning, and driving the business forward with new technology and small teams.

Q2.What is your motto at work?

At work and in life I’m a very driven person. I believe that showing up, giving your all, helping people, and not being afraid to fail are the keys to success.

I also value opportunity much more than stability, security, and comfort in all areas of my life. This was the main reason for starting my first company after graduation, moving overseas, and changing employers in the past.

In most cases, I’ve left very stable and secure positions with famous companies to work for smaller less well-known companies where they provided an environment where I could create more opportunities and continue improving.

Overall, I believe it is up to each of us to create our personal opportunities. When we do, it’s important to focus, be driven to achieve the goal, and not to let temporary failure to get in our way.

Q3.What part of your job inspires you the most?

I’m inspired when my team is able to overcome very difficult problems and challenges to achieve a our goal. While the goal is important the best part is the team improvement and watching the team come together to overcome the adversity.

This is especially rewarding when team members feel comfortable to go to each other for help and when the initial person that struggled masters the task and becomes the teacher for other members in the team.

Q4.What is the main reason for joining Housmart?

I joined Housmart because it’s disrupting the real estate market and creating a lot of opportunity and innovation in the process. For example, using cutting edge machine learning and cloud technologies with customer first mobile and desktop applications to deliver the best possible customer experience. It’s also the first time that I’ve seen this level of pricing transparency. It’s easy to see that Housmart is putting customers first and forcing the rest of the market to change in the process.

I also joined because I believe it’s a great place for me to learn new skills and use my previous experience building highly scalable systems to deliver value to customers and as a result grow the business.

Q5.What are your future goals?

My short term goal is to increase the amount of data available for customers while also increasing its overall accuracy using machine learning and analysis. I’m also working to reduce the time between updates so that customers have all the latest information available to them.

Over the long term my goal is to reduce the information gap between what agents and customers have access to. The more formal goal is to collect as much data as possible, review and analyze the data using advanced machine learning over time in order to reduce the information gap as much as possible so that customers are on a level playing fields with agents.

Over the much longer term my goal is to continue expanding my experience within machine learning and artificial intelligence as I believe this will be at the core of innovation and growth opportunities over the next 20 years.

I’m American and have been in Asia for more than 15 years. I graduated with an MBA and a Bachelors of Computer Information Systems from Baker College, Center for Graduate Studies.
While in university I founded multiple technology companies before moving to Asia. In Japan, I’ve been working as a Senior Software and Cloud Engineer at Nomura Securities, Monex Securities, a FinTech company called ASBET. Most notably I was the Head of Engineering and Chief Engineer at Deloitte Digital Japan where I lead a team to deliver multi-million dollar projects for some of the world’s leading firms.
At Housmart, I will be working as an engineer focused on scaling the platform, system automation, and machine learning with a goal of delivering a great customer experience.
